School is just around the corner and with school comes exams. It’s normal for kids to be a little stressed and nervous before exams. It can even help test performance at times.
However, some kids experience anxiety and nerves to the point where it gets in the way of their concentration.
What causes test anxiety?
Test anxiety is no different than anxiety in everyday life. It’s often brought on by stress and pressure to do well. When you’re under stress, your body releases an increased amount of adrenaline, which often causes sweating, an increased heart rate and rapid breathing.
How can I help my child with test anxiety?
There are ways to help children with test anxiety to ensure they are able to focus and perform well while taking their exams.
Teach your child how to use anxiety to their advantage. Reiterating to take an active approach when feeling anxiety can stop your child from complaining or fretting when they feel anxiety.
Help your child prepare for the exam. Good study habits and reinforcement while studying can reduce the amount of stress a child feels while taking an exam. Cramming before an exam decreases the amount a person can take in and makes them less prepared for an exam.
Practicing with mock exams. The more a child takes an exam, the more used to it they will be. Making mock exams before a real test can prepare your child so they are able to concentrate better.
Practice breathing exercises with your child. Deep breathing exercises can help a child center and remain calm.
Be patient and understanding with your child about their anxiety to take an exam.
